Riverhead, New York, a town of nearly 28,000, is located in Suffolk County on Long Island, approximately 70 miles from New York City. As its name implies, it is a riverside town that lies on the Peconic River. Riverhead was once part of neighboring Southold Town until 1792 when it was carved out of an area called the “Aquebogue Division” of Southold. A 15-block section of Riverhead is referred to as “Polish Town” after the many Polish immigrants who settled in the area around the early 1900s.

Attractions in Riverhead include the Atlantis Marine World, the Dinosaur Walk Museum, and the Railroad Museum of Long Island. The Vail-Leavitt Music Hall, built in the 1800s, is a historic theater that still holds events today. For beach lovers, Reeves, South Jamesport, Iron Pier, and Wading River Beaches are all located in or around Riverhead.

The median household income for residents of Riverhead was just under $55,000 in 2005. The median house value in 2005 was $369,600, up from $166,000 in 2000. Must have been nice to sell a house now after buying it in 2000!
